Over 70% of fights end up on the ground. This is a significant statistic. Most injures occur on the ground and most physical confrontations turn into wrestling matches on the ground. If you take an Adversary to the ground, it should only be done under the right conditions. If the Adversary takes you to the ground you need to get up as soon as possible.

Remember, speed always trumps power (or size) when you are standing up. It is just the opposite on the ground; power (or size) will trump speed.

The other SIGNIGICANT issue is your stamina. Most violent criminals are not in great shape and have histories of drug or alcohol abuse or other unhealthy lifestyles. If you can outlast the Adversary, even on the ground, you will prevail.

Difficulties on the ground include:
• Not being able to choose where and when you will fight.
• Your entire focus must be on the subject you are dealing with.
• You’re set up for a secondary attack and your most vital target (head) is open to attack.
• While upright, speed usually prevails. On the ground, size usually prevails.
• Ground fighting increases injuries.

Don’t go to the ground (Ever watch COPS? It seems they always go to the ground). You don’t belong there. If you find yourself there it should be controlled. If not, get up and get out.
